Book Review | Lies Women Believe

Lies Women Believe
And the Truth That Sets Them Free
Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

Moody Publishers | February 6, 2018
Christian nonfiction

{GoodReads}
Counter the lies that keep you from abundant living.

Satan is the master deceiver and his lies are endless. And the lies Christian women believe are at the root of most of their struggles.

"Many women live under a cloud of personal guilt and condemnation," says Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth. "Many are in bondage to their past. Others are gripped by fear of rejection and a longing for approval. Still others are emotional prisoners."

In best selling Lies Women Believe, Nancy exposes those areas of deception most commonly believed by Christian women—lies about God, sin, priorities, marriage and family, emotions, and more. She then sheds light on how we can be delivered from bondage and set free to walk in God's grace, forgiveness, and abundant life. Nancy offers the most effective weapon to counter and overcome Satan's deceptions: God's truth!

MY REVIEW

I've heard so much about this book over the years.  They say you'll either love it & learn, or you'll hate it & say you're good as you are.  But from what I've observed of those who dislike the harsh---but so needed---truth in these pages, it's because they are the ones most struggling with one or more of the lies, and until they picked up the book were in complete denial, content right where they are.

Dear sister.
The lies of the enemy can be so subtle & sound so right as to blind us to the one & only Truth that frees us from chains we may not have known existed.  In Nancy Wolgemuth's updated & revised version of Lies Women Believe, she touches on topics that are extremely relevant to ourselves & our culture in the here & now.

In each chapter we read a fictional diary entry from the first woman to walk God's green Earth.  "Eve's" journal may be fictional & solely for the purpose of this book, but who are we to know how she felt all those years ago at the beginning of creation?  She may very well have experienced the same feelings of regret, fear, anxiety, depression, discontentment, & loneliness in her life with Adam & their growing family.

With the exception of Chapter 1 (titled "Truth. . . Or Consequences"), the following chapters focus on lies that are so prevalent in the minds & hearts of ALL ladies, young or old.

LIES WOMEN BELIEVE. . .
Chapter 2:  ABOUT GOD
Chapter 3:  ABOUT THEMSELVES
Chapter 4:  ABOUT SIN
Chapter 5:  ABOUT PRIORITIES
Chapter 6:  ABOUT SEXUALITY
Chapter 7:  ABOUT MARRIAGE
Chapter 8:  ABOUT CHILDREN
Chapter 9:  ABOUT EMOTIONS
Chapter 10:  ABOUT CIRCUMSTANCES

(Chapter 11: Countering Lies with the Truth, Chapter 12: The Truth that Sets Us Free)

As you'll see above, though some chapters focus on sexuality, marriage, & children, even if you are a single lady possibly in a relationship---or not yet in one---I would still recommend reading this book.  If you're not quite there yet in any of this, there's a good chance you will be & the information in these pages is SO beneficial for everyone!

I highly recommend this to all ladies.
However, I would advise diving into this book with an open heart & an open mind.

"So, my dear sister, when your eyes are filled with tears & you're tempted to throw in the towel, take courage.  Lift up your head, cry out for grace, press on, give thanks, and know that it will not be long before your faith will be rewarded with the sight of the One who has promised to be with you to the end." (p. 298)

To each is given a bag of tools,
A shapeless mass, and a book of rules,
And each must make, ere life is flown,
A stumbling block or a stepping stone.
