What's in a Name? || Places Edition

Happy Monday!
I dunno about you, but my Monday has been rather cold & dreary, though Gabe & I did manage to get out for a nice brisk walk with his Grammie.  It's days like today we find we take for granted the joy of the sun.  :]

I've got a loverly set of place-name monickers for you today, my friends!  Is your character bank list growing with these posts?? If so, I have done/am doing mah job.  *^ - ^*

Enjoy!

Laos
M | English, French
la-ohs

Possibly derived from the Greek Laios, meaning unknown.  This is the name of a Southeast Asian country.  According to Wikipedia, it "is a socialist state and the only landlocked country in Southeast Asia at the heart of the Indochinese peninsula, bordered by Myanmar (Burma) and China to the northwest, Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the southwest, and Thailand to the west and southwest. . . Present-day Laos traces its historic and cultural identity to the kingdom of Lan Xang Hom Khao (Kingdom of a Million Elephants Under the White Parasol), which existed for four centuries as one of the largest kingdoms in Southeast Asia.  [Read More]"

Sahara
F | English (rare)

From the name of the world's largest desert, derived from the Arabic word ṣaḥārā meaning "deserts."

Boston
M & F | English (American)

Derived from the name of the city of Boston in Massachusetts, USA.  According to Wikipedia, "Governor Winthrop [a colonist leader in the early 1600s] announced the foundation of the town of Boston on September 7, 1630 (Old Style), with the place named after the town of Boston, in the English county of Lincolnshire, from which several prominent colonists emigrated. The name also derives from Saint Botolph, who is the patron saint of travelers." [Read More]

Georgia
F | English

Latinate feminine form of George, meaning "farmer, earthworker."  This is the name of an America state, named after the British King George II.

Talk to me!  What is your favorite(s) of these four? I really like Laos for some reason.  I could see him as a totally epic character in either a medieval fantasy, or even a present day fiction.  :]  What do YOU think?

  1. My day has been cold and dreary as well. Looking forward to some hopeful sunshine tomorrow! Though the cloudy weather HAS been cozy. ^_^

Also, these posts have added to my collected names SO MUCH. I think over half the names on my list are from your posts. :D

I'm loving these places names. Laos is my favorites of these too. Totally sounds medieval, yes! Sahara is a really pretty idea for a name too though!

    1. Aren't they fun?? Yes, I agree. It certainly depends on the use---some are too awfully common or used in a rather outrageously unnecessary way... I really like Sahara as well! It reminds me of 'our' name ;D Funny thing is, whilst shopping with my sisters in the mall, we met a store associate by that name in the Altar'd State store---that's what sparked the idea to feature it here. :]

To each is given a bag of tools,
A shapeless mass, and a book of rules,
And each must make, ere life is flown,
A stumbling block or a stepping stone.
