The Deadly Shallows
Coastal Guardians #3

Bethany House Publishers | July 1st, 2022
Christian Fiction, Romance, Suspense, Mystery, Thriller

{GoodReads}
A DEADLY ATTACK.
A STOLEN WEAPON CAPABLE OF IMMENSE DESTRUCTION.
A PAINFUL SECRET THAT THREATENS TO TEAR TWO HEARTS APART.

CGIS Agent Noah Rowley is rocked to the core when several of his valued team members come under fire on his Coast Guard base. He and his remaining team race to the scene and end the attack, but not before innocent lives are lost. Furious and grief-stricken, he vows to do whatever is needed to bring the mastermind behind the attack to justice.

Stunned by the ambush, Coast Guard flight medic Brooke Kesler evacuates in a helicopter carrying the only surviving gunman. The gravely wounded man whispers mysterious information to Brooke that immediately paints a target on her back.

As Brooke and Noah race to uncover answers, emotions between them ignite. Noah struggles to protect Brooke at all costs and to conceal the secret that prevents him from becoming what he longs to be--the right man for her.

Everything is at stake as a horrifying truth emerges. . . .

The attack wasn't the end game. It was only the beginning.

Bestselling author Dani Pettrey again delivers a fast-paced story in an acclaimed style readers have come to love: full of snappy dialogue, thrilling adventure romance, and unexpected plot twists.

THE BASICS
This story was quite the ride!  While it is the third book in the Coastal Guardians series, it can most certainly be read as a standalone, as the story does well to fill one in on the other happenings in the previous novels.

This book follows the point of views (POVs) of Brooke & Noah, as well as Caleb & Austin.  I loved the variety of personalities, and consider the POV switches to be well done---easy to discern the characters from one another.

As this is a Christian fiction, it is completely clean in regards to content.  And quite the mystery, with plenty of action-packed adventure and literal bad-guy stakeouts.

Read on for a bit more on the content!

VIOLENCE
A mass shooting takes place at a graduation ceremony, injuring many people & killing a few.  A young officer on stage is shot in the abdomen---red blooms over her dress whites.  Gunshots constantly going off until help arrives, where the responding agents gun down the shooters.  A young woman is bleeding out; a man is shot in the thigh; another suffers a shot to the back (causing a collapsed lung & gurgling sounds).

A woman has a dislocated arm.

A character is kidnapped and drugged, a bag placed over her head.
[SPOILER]
She is later tortured for information.  (Thankfully, she is protected from worse...)

SPIRITUAL CONTENT
Christian fiction!  Characters pray and rely deeply on their faith through various trials.

LANGUAGE // ALCOHOL & DRUGS
None.  Common slang used a time or two---for example, "heck."

Red wine with pizza.  The hospital uses its normal medicines for pain & treatments.

ROMANTIC CONTENT
Budding romances between Brooke & Noah, and implied with Caleb & Austin.  But nothing graphic or untoward.  Both men are gentleman.

CONCLUSION
Overall, a good read!  Intriguing and at times an on-your-toes thriller.  If you enjoy a modern-day action novel, with mystery thrown in, and a good dash of intriguing character backstory, then perhaps add this one to your TBR.  ;]
