I had loads of fun penning this little tale.
Read my short story below!

> > MY STORY < <

“On a scale of one to Australia, how dangerous are we talking?”
There was a pause. Then, “I was thinking more like Africa…”
“Whaaaat? You said it’d be nothin’. Like Madagascar, ‘if anything,’ and now you tell me ‘Africa’?”
“Yep.” Not bothering to look at his first mate, he heard his friend’s growl of frustration. And he couldn’t help the grin lifting his lips. This, however, only caused a chain reaction in his second’s countenance.
“And he smiles,” Lorn emphasized the last word, throwing his hands up in surrender.
“It’s the thrill of adventure, man,” his captain replied, calmly. Amused. “Don’t tell me you aren’t even the least bit intrigued by this offer.”
He was satisfied by the scowling silence that followed. And he could’ve sworn his friend was trying so very hard not to grin.
It was just the two of them at the helm this fine morning. The rest of his little crew were still sleeping, early as it was. He could see the beginning of the horizon’s glow now.
As his first mate aboard the pristine Gypsy Haven, he’d wanted Lorn to hear of the change in course first hand. It wasn’t often the commanders of Old America contacted him. In fact, he could recall only once in all his ten years of service and five years solo that he received such a call. And that particular event had been desperate.
An audible sigh was heard off to his left somewhere, but he didn’t bother acknowledging it.
          “A simple rescue mission?”
“Aye.” He turned the ship’s helm a degree, feeling the Haven shift slightly to obey.
“You know the last time—” Lorn paused, “—any time you said that word, actually—it was anything BUT.”
“And yet here you still stand,” the captain chuckled. “On my ship.” He lived to tease his more practical, logically-minded friend. “You could’ve retired ages ago, ya know. Been living it up on the mainland, a wife and six kids—”
          “Six?”
“—safe and secure from any of my daring adventures.”
Lorn scoffed. “Yeah. But who would keep you out of trouble, you big boulder?” He released a resigned sigh.
“Ah, see? I knew you’d come around.” The captain’s voice was triumphant.
“I never said I was happy about it.”
          “Of course not.”
A comfortable silence ensued before the captain moved from the helm. “Take the wheel, my good man. I’m going to call the sailors to the bridge. Their captain must tell them the good news.”
          Lorn obeyed, grumbling.
The captain grinned and grabbed his mouthpiece like he did nearly every morning. “Rise and shine, sailors of the Gypsy Haven. This is your captain, Marcus Bedivere, speaking. Your presence is requested at the bridge,” he paused a beat, then added, “Pronto.” His grin remained at the feeling of control—this was his crew and his ship.
Lorn looked at him, aghast. “What? Before breakfast?”
“They’ll have plenty of time to grab a bite before shifts begin. I need their full attention, and what better way than to have growling stomachs remind them to listen attentively and thereby to conduct business more quickly?” Marcus looked out the vast windows of his large airship. He would never tire of the view as dawn broke in vibrant hues across the sea of clouds. The Haven held steady, her new course bringing with it a new purpose.
          “Slave driver.”
          He laughed. “Beanpole.”
          “Cap’n McBossy.”
          “Airhog.”
          “Dingo.”
          “Lawrence.”
“Ohhhhh. That’s a low blow, you big—”
          “Dork.”
Lorn’s brow furrowed in confusion. “Dork?”
“Yeah. It’s Old World slang for numbskull, or dummy. Jerk. Goof.”
His first mate shook his head, rolling his eyes. But Marcus caught the suppressed laughter.
“You and your words, ya jerk.”
The dawn rose to the sound of laughter only shared by true friends.

  1. This story DEFINITELY brought a smile and a laugh! This was greeeeat! You know bromances and banter are my FAVE and this encompasses those two things to a T. I LOVE their contrasting personalities and friendship. The captain's good-natured, carefree, fun loving attitude was the BEST. I just loooove characters like that. But ESPECIALLY when they're coupled with a no-nonsense person. This was one of my favorite types of relationships to read about EVER.

I also love how it was set in the future and "dork" is an outdated term. Too fun! Also, calling him "Lawrence" being the worst insult was HILARIOUS!

Oh my gracious, I just loved it all! :D

    1. Awwww, sweet Lauri!! Your comments always bring a smile & just make my day. So glad you enjoyed this! I love those kind of relationships as well---we need more of those innocent friendships where the world doesn't twist & corrupt them, ya know? Yessss! Those kind of personalities make the BEST teams, and dialogue!

Ha! Me too! I thought it was a fun twist. xDDD

      Thank you, dear girl!! <3

  2. Hey Sarah! I know you're probably still trying to play around with the new blog theme and figuring things out, but could you make the text a little bigger and more spaced apart? It was really hard for me to read the story and stay interested because my eyes kept straining to read it. Thanks!

  3. Hey, girl! Yes, I'm still tweaking a few things as they surface, but thanks for the feedback. :] I'll see what I can do. I do know, however, that many times some computer/monitor screens will fiddle with the appearances of some templates depending on the size of said screens. Hopefully, that's not an issue! I'll see what I can do regarding font sizes here.

To each is given a bag of tools,
A shapeless mass, and a book of rules,
And each must make, ere life is flown,
A stumbling block or a stepping stone.
