What's in a Name? || Place Names

Happy July!
How's your Monday progressing? Are you taking part in Camp NaNoWriMo this month??  I'm in a little cabin with one of my dearest friends, and it turns out we have the same goal!

Here's some fresh & lovely place names for you, m'dears.  :]

Enjoy!

Rome
M | English (modern), Italian
roam (English), ro-mah (Italian)

This is the name of the capitol city & comune of Italy.  The history of this city spans 28 centuries, and while Roman mythology dates the founding of Rome in 753 BC, there is evidence it was inhabited much earlier, amking it one of the oldest continuously occupied sites in Europe.  The origin of the city's name is believed to have come from its founder & first king, Romulus ("of Rome" in Latin).

Havana
F | English (modern)

From the name of the capitol city of Cuba.  Founded in 1514, it was given the name San Cristóbal de la Habana, meaning "Saint Christopher of the Habana" by conquistador Dego Velásquez.  Habana could've been the name of the native people.  Modern use of the name could possibly be inspired from the given name Savannah.

Mombasa
Kenyan, African

The name of a coastal city of Kenya, along the Indian Ocean.  It is the country's oldest & second largest city.

Virginia
English, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Swedish, Romanian, Ancient Roman

Feminine form of the Roman family name Verginius or Virginius.  The meaning is unknown, but it has long been associated with the Latin word virgo, "maid, virgin."  This was the given name of the first English baby born in the New World---Virginia Dare, 1587, Roanoke Island.  She was name for the Colony of Virginia, which was in turn named after Elizabeth I, the Virgin Queen.  This is also the name of a state in the Southeastern & Mid-Atlantic region of the United States.

To each is given a bag of tools,
A shapeless mass, and a book of rules,
And each must make, ere life is flown,
A stumbling block or a stepping stone.
