What's in a Name? || Places Edition

Good Monday to you!
I realized today that I neglected to share my first-Monday-of-the-month Place Names post last week.  So, I'm substituting it for today.  :]  Hope you don't mind.

These are so fun!!!!
Enjoy.  :]

York
M | English

From a surname, derived from York, a city in northern England.  Originally, the city's name was Eburacon, Latinized as Eboracum, meaning "yew" in Brythonic.  It was altered by association with Old English Eoforwic, meaning "pig farm."  The American city & state of New York were named after the Duke of York, James II of England.

Nevada
M & F | English (American)

This is the name of a state in the United States of America.  It comes from the Spanish Sierra Nevada, meaning "snow-covered mountains."

Cairo
English
KIE-ro

From Arabic al-Qahirah, meaning "the victorious," in honor of Fatimid caliph al-Mu'izz li Din Allah (932-975).  This is the name of the capital city of Egypt.

Dallas
M & F English

Name of a city in Texas, possibly named in honor of American Vice President George Mifflin Dallas.  Dallas is a surname, originally taken from a Scottish place name meaning "meadow dwelling."

Zurich
German

From Zürich, a Swiss city.  Meaning unknown.

Geneva
English

This is the name of the second-most populous city in Switzerland and the most populous city of the Romandy, the French-speaking part of Switzerland.  Mentioned in Latin texts by Caesar, with the spelling Genava, it is probably derived from the Celtic genawa-, which comes from the element genu- ("bend, knee")---in the sense of a bending river or estuary.

I dunno about you, but I LOVE finding these place names to share! What do you think of this set??

Comments

  1. I LOVE this set! Nevada especially can be such a pretty name! There's an author who writes mysteries I think, and her name is Nevada Barr. I always thought that was the COOLEST name. Geneva is another one I've loved for ages!

These others are brilliant ideas as well. I especially like Cairo! I just think using places as names is such a fun idea!

    1. Yes, I agree! And that's awesome, I've not heard of her before---and I luvs me some mysteries... *winks* I love Geneva too!!

Thank you! I think Cairo is pretty cool. I can totally see it in either a Dystopian or even a Medieval genre... *thoughtful face*

To each is given a bag of tools,
A shapeless mass, and a book of rules,
And each must make, ere life is flown,
A stumbling block or a stepping stone.
