What's in a Name?

Monday arrived again, folks! (And is nearly over now as I write this. . .)
I do hope yours was pleasant and filled with thanks for another day.  :]

The names I've got for you today are particularly interesting, if I do say so myself.  At least two have a tidbit of history and Eastern mythology.

Enjoy!

Bleda
M | History
BLAY-DAH

Possibly of Turkic origin, meaning "wise."  According to other existing theories, it is believed to be of Gothic origin, or a Gothic form of a Hunnic name.  This was the given name of the brother of Attila the Hun.

Tiamat
F | Near Eastern Mythology
TEE-ǝ-maht, TYAH-maht

From the Akkadian word tâmtu meaning "sea."  In Babylonian mythology, Tiamat was the personification of the sea, appearing in the form of a huge dragon.  According to legend, she died (rather brutally) at the hands of the god, Marduk, her great-grandson.

Einar
M | Norwegian, Icelandic, Swedish, Danish

Meaning "lone warrior."  From the Old Norse name Einarr, derived from the elements ein "one, alone" and arr "warrior."  This given name shares the same roots as the word einherjar, the word for the slain warriors in Valhalla.

Lark
M & F | English (rare)
LAHRK

From the English word for the type of songbird.

  1. Ooooh, these are a set of such intriguing ones! I really like Tiamat. With a name meaning "sea" there's lots of fun ways it could be used!

I had to laugh at Lark because I have a character named that, except it's a boy and he's a mischievous fae who causes all sorts of trouble. XD But I've also seen it used as a girl's name. There are just so many fun possibilities with that name!

  2. YAY!!! A new names post!!!!

I've heard of Einar, but not the others. I love Lark, I can so see myself naming a character that one of these days, LOL.

Awesome post, Sarah!! (How's the baby doing??)

  3. As the master of finding cool names, do you feel like there's a lot of pressure to pick a super rad name for baby C? ;)

  4. Christine: I know! I thought that particular name was certainly unique. :D And yes, anything with the meaning of "sea" or "ocean" is so much fun to use. Haha! I KNEW it sounded familiar!! But it popped into my head for this week, and I found I hadn't featured it before, so there ya go! Yes, I agree! I thought it'd be fun to have a girl with that name, from the songbird, but she be a character who can't sing to save her life. xD

Catherine: *beams* Awww, thank you, girlie! Yes, I thought Einar was pretty awesome. And I really love the simplicity of Lark as well! Definitely! I'd love to hear what type of character he/she would be in your story. :D My pleasure, m'dear. And you are so sweet to ask! Baby is doing well! Extremely active these days! I love feeling the flutterings (as they call it). ^ - ^ [I realized earlier today I haven't posted ANY kind of update... But we reach 20 weeks in a couple days, so maybe I'll do a quick hulloo then.]

Lauren: Aww, you are too kind!! I don't know about the "master" title, but as a matter of fact we had names picked out before we were even engaged! Haha! (talk about planning ahead...) xD We find out the gender in less than two weeks, so I'll definitely be sure to share what we've chosen! Till then, I'm gonna have to leave y'all in suspense... ;D

Thanks for commenting, dear friends! <3

To each is given a bag of tools,
A shapeless mass, and a book of rules,
And each must make, ere life is flown,
A stumbling block or a stepping stone.
