What's in a Name?

It's been many a day since I've posted a set of names.  And so, while my batch of bread is rising, I thought it was as good a time as any.  :]

I think I've mentioned one of my most effective ways to find names is to read the end credits of movies. Have I?  Well, if not, I guess I just did.  :] Truly, it's fascinating.  I could watch to the very last production note and probably leave with a few pages worth of intriguing, unique names.  Writers, this is a great trick in finding the perfect name for your hero!  And entertaining as well.  You wouldn't believe some of the names out there. . .

For example:
GIVEN NAMES:                                                     SURNAMES:
-  Jerzy                                                                 -  Mahaffie
-  Garwood                                                           -  Stonebreaker
-  Tanissa                                                              -  Snively
-  Askia                                                                 -  Wojewooski
-  Sindharmawen                                                   -  Kwak
-  Lisaroo                                                              -  Wildermoth

Just to name a few.  :]  Please note, I am not making fun of these, by any means.  They are so unique and different, I just had to share them with you.  I especially love the surnames!

Anyway, I came across the first name in this set while perusing the end credits of Guardians of the Galaxy, which was pretty good, by the way.  But the best way to explain it:  It is definitely NOT Captain America.  Still, it had it's moments.  :]  Ahem, on to the names!

  1. This is very interesting! I love finding the meanings of names; if I had to interpret my real name, it would be lioness. >.< But I'm nothing of a lioness.

  2. Love the Irish theme!
And I agree, movie credits have some of the neatest names.
P.S. I don't know if you're still looking for name post suggestions, but if you are I have a couple: First and last names that go together (by sound, country, meaning, etc) or animal inspired names.

  3. Hi Sarah!

I am such a name geek, too. My husband and I rarely, if ever, leave the movie theatre without first taking note of the fabulous pool of character names to choose from that is the End Credits. Also, Guardians of the Galaxy was one of my favorite Summer movies this year. I AM GROOT! <3

On another note: Love those Irish Gaelic names you've showcased here! Are these names for your fictional characters, or simply just for general funzies?

  4. Hello, Morning! Thanks for stopping by! :] "Lioness" is a beautiful meaning to have in a name in that it describes strength, silent power, and value. You may not think you are like a lioness, but I bet there is some quality that resembles the graceful creature. ^__^

Sam! Yes, I am always open to suggestions! Sometimes I run a little dry on ideas... And these are great! I'll get to them next week :D

Hi, Sarah! You're an Elizabeth too! ;D I admit your name had me a tad confused: "Sarah Eli--Wait, that's not me!" Haha, thanks for commenting! GotG was pretty good, I loved Groot!! And to answer your question, I feature random names for fellow writers in need of a new, refreshing title with the perfect meaning to match their characters' personalities. Some are the given names of my original characters, but others are random (with random photos to "match"), and are merely to help aspiring authors. :] Here's the link to the very first of my Name posts--it gives brief description of why I'm doing these posts: http://sarah-plainandaverage.blogspot.com/2012/12/whats-in-name.html

To each is given a bag of tools,
A shapeless mass, and a book of rules,
And each must make, ere life is flown,
A stumbling block or a stepping stone.
